Dragonwilds Combat & Gear Progression
Plan melee, ranged, and magic gear progression through Ashenfall without treating one combat style as a permanent class.
Last updated: 2026-09-04
Dragonwilds supports melee, ranged, and magic without locking a character into a permanent class. A strong solo loadout normally keeps a primary style, a safe ranged answer, healing food, and the correct environmental supplies.
Combat styles
- Melee: swords, scimitars, maces, hammers, axes, great weapons, shields, blocking, dodging, and parrying.
- Ranged: shortbows, longbows, crossbows, ammunition, and dragonhide armour.
- Magic: elemental spells, staves or wands, runes, robes, and utility magic.
Regional gear ladder
The broad progression moves from early bronze and iron equipment into Steel and Green Dragonhide in Fellhollow, Mithril and Blue Dragonhide around Dowdun Reach, then Adamant, Red Dragonhide, Infinity robes, and stronger Vestiges in Umbral Sands.
Do not move into a new material tier with only a weapon upgrade. Tools, armour, food, runes, repairs, and resistances determine whether the expedition stays productive.
Boss preparation
- Repair every equipped item before leaving.
- Bring at least two viable damage ranges.
- Use food immediately when health drops; the 0.12 health rework removed Wardshield and made food restore health directly.
- Prepare for the region's hazard—poison, Soul-rift pressure, cold or terrain, Sunscorch, or quicksand.
- Place a safe recovery point where the world and quest rules allow it.
- Split party jobs: one player watching adds or revives can be more valuable than six people chasing damage.

Combat remains volatile ahead of the September 15 full release. Jagex has announced further changes to blocking, stamina costs, special attacks, animation cancelling, and magic weapons, so avoid treating current frame timings or point-by-point meta lists as permanent.
The weapon ladder also changes: current Abyssal Whips convert into PL4 Abysmal Whips, while the proper PL7 Masterwork Abyssal Whip becomes an Umbral Sands recipe. Read the Whip rework guide before investing in the current item.
