Dragonwilds Abyssal Whip & Abysmal Whip Guide

Understand the Dragonwilds 1.0 Abyssal Whip rework, including the PL4 Abysmal Whip, PL7 Masterwork recipe, existing-item conversion, and preparation.

Last updated: 2026-09-04

The Abyssal Whip changes substantially with Dragonwilds 1.0 on September 15, 2026. Jagex is moving the iconic weapon from its early-game position to Power Level 7 and introducing a separate Power Level 4 Abysmal Whip.

These changes are announced but not live in version 0.12.1. This page separates the current weapon from the confirmed launch conversion.

What changes in 1.0?

Item or sourceConfirmed 1.0 behaviour
Existing Abyssal WhipsConverted into Abysmal Whips
Abyssal DemonsDrop the PL4 Abysmal Whip and continue dropping Abyssal Spines
Abysmal WhipApplies Bleed, lacks the original special attack, and can use Ascension Cores
Abyssal Demon rewardsAlso include Tier 4 Upgrade Shards
Masterwork Abyssal WhipPower Level 7 weapon retaining the full special attack and effects
Masterwork recipeFound in Umbral Sands near the Burning Spire
Upgrade pathRequires an Abysmal Whip as an ingredient

The names are intentionally similar: Abysmal is the regional PL4 Vestige weapon, while Abyssal is the later PL7 Masterwork goal.

What happens to an existing Abyssal Whip?

Jagex says every existing live-game Abyssal Whip will be replaced by an Abysmal Whip when 1.0 arrives. Do not stockpile current whips expecting each one to remain the same PL4 item with its existing special attack.

Keep at least one if you want a head start on the confirmed Masterwork recipe, but wait for the released crafting interface before farming exact quantities. Jagex has confirmed the Abysmal Whip ingredient, not the complete launch recipe.

How to get the Abysmal Whip

After 1.0, Abyssal Demons will provide the Abysmal Whip chase reward. They continue to drop Abyssal Spines and gain Tier 4 Upgrade Shards. Until launch, the exact practical drop rate and best repeat route should be treated as unverified.

Prepare with:

  • a repeatable Ghornfell combat setup;
  • poison and swamp travel supplies;
  • inventory space for Spines, Shards, and weapon drops;
  • a nearby recovery route;
  • a second damage style for awkward pulls.

How to get the PL7 Abyssal Whip

The Masterwork recipe will be discovered in Umbral Sands, in the shadow of the Burning Spire. The final weapon is PL7 and includes the proper special attack, full damage, and the established whip effects.

The official reveal does not publish a precise map coordinate or full material list. On launch day, verify the recipe location in the released build before following copied coordinates from prerelease videos.

Should you spend Ascension Cores on the Abysmal Whip?

Jagex confirms that the Abysmal Whip can be upgraded with Ascension Cores. That does not automatically make it the best use of a rare Core: it is also an ingredient in the Masterwork path.

Compare the live forge preview and your intended build first. If the Masterwork recipe consumes the weapon regardless of its upgrade state, an early Core could be wasted. The Ascension Core guide explains the current upgrade system.

Launch checklist

  1. Read the 1.0 patch notes before loading an important character.
  2. Confirm that existing whips converted correctly.
  3. Check Abyssal Demon rewards in the live Journal.
  4. Locate the Burning Spire recipe through normal exploration.
  5. Inspect the complete Masterwork recipe before upgrading or dismantling anything.
  6. Compare observed hits in the Damage Calculator.
