Dragonwilds Ascension Cores & Weapon Upgrades
Learn how Ascension Shards and Cores work, where Dragonwilds Cores come from, which weapons they upgrade, and how to spend them efficiently.
Last updated: 2026-08-22
Ascension Cores upgrade eligible Masterwork and Vestige weapons at the Mystic Forge. They are endgame progression materials, not replacements for the ordinary Bronze-to-Adamant equipment ladder. Build a dependable weapon first, then use Cores to extend an exceptional item into later power tiers.
The most important live rule is simple: Power Level 7 Cores come directly from the Nightmare Crucible. Power Level 7 Shards do not exist.
Ascension Shards vs Ascension Cores
| Material | Purpose | Verified acquisition pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Ascension Shards | Ingredients used in displayed Core recipes for supported tiers | Regional progression and relevant activities shown in the live Journal |
| Ascension Cores | Upgrade eligible Masterwork or Vestige weapons at the Mystic Forge | Crafted for supported tiers or earned from endgame activities |
| Power Level 7 Core | Highest live pre-1.0 Crucible upgrade material | Direct Nightmare Crucible reward |
Always inspect the Mystic Forge recipe and Journal before starting a large farm. Recipe costs and reward tuning are version-sensitive, and an older video may show an interface from before the 0.12.1 implementation.
How to use an Ascension Core
- Place and access a Mystic Forge.
- Bring the eligible Masterwork or Vestige weapon you want to improve.
- Open the upgrade or relevant crafting workflow.
- Select the target power tier and review every required material.
- Confirm that the preview names the intended weapon and tier.
- Spend the Core only after comparing the upgrade with your other progression needs.
Standard craftable weapons are not automatically eligible merely because they share the same power level. The live forge interface is the authority: if the item does not appear as a valid input, do not craft extra Cores expecting the recipe to unlock later.
Where Ascension Cores come from
Nightmare Crucible
The Nightmare Crucible is the confirmed source of direct Power Level 7 Cores. It is a boss-rush activity accessed through Umbral Sands Engrams and rewards repeatable endgame preparation.
Farm it with a stable loadout, not the weapon you hope a lucky drop will rescue. Record food, ammunition, rune use, repairs, and completion time. If a run consumes more than you can replace, improve the supporting build before turning the activity into a grind.
Shard-to-Core recipes
The Mystic Forge displays conversion recipes for supported lower tiers. Read the live recipe because the required shard type and supporting materials depend on the target tier. Treat the Journal and forge as more reliable than copied recipe tables after a patch.
Do not chase a PL7 shard recipe. Jagex states that PL7 Shards do not exist and that the displayed conversion recipe is unintended; it is scheduled for removal with 1.0.
Best weapon to upgrade first
Use this priority order:
- Your most-used eligible weapon for difficult repeatable content.
- A moveset you can execute consistently under pressure.
- A weapon supported by complete armour, food, and ammunition or runes.
- A second combat style only after the primary style reaches a useful breakpoint.
Rarity alone is not a reason to invest. A specialised Vestige that stays in storage is a poor first upgrade, while a familiar weapon used in every Fight Cave or Crucible attempt immediately returns value.
Upgrade decision worksheet
Before spending a Core, record:
| Test | Before upgrade | Expected benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Average observed hit | Enter live result | More damage per clean opening |
| Sustained DPS | Enter live result | Shorter encounter after stamina and reloads |
| Time to kill | Enter live result | Less exposure to boss mechanics |
| Healing used | Enter live result | Indirect benefit if the fight ends earlier |
| Ammo or rune cost | Enter live result | May rise, fall, or remain unchanged |
Use the Damage & DPS Calculator for a consistent comparison. Test against the same enemy, difficulty, buffs, and party size. One critical hit is not a benchmark.
Solo farming priorities
Solo players need repeatability more than peak burst:
- carry a repaired backup for poor matchups;
- preserve stamina for defence rather than forcing the final combo hit;
- use healing before the food cooldown becomes an emergency;
- store rare materials after each successful run;
- upgrade one weapon at a time.
If the Crucible is inconsistent, farm ordinary Umbral equipment, Sanguine Urns, and food first. An Ascension upgrade improves a weapon; it does not fix missing health progression or an unsupported combat style.
Co-op farming priorities
Agree which weapon and player receive the first upgrade before the run. A party gains more from one completed, frequently used upgrade than from several Cores sitting in different inventories without a plan.
Assign target calls, add control, and recovery roles. Each player should carry personal supplies even when one member focuses on support. After the run, store Cores in a clearly labelled container and note who is saving for which tier.
Common Ascension mistakes
Farming nonexistent PL7 Shards
The live known-issues note explicitly says they do not exist. Obtain PL7 Cores directly from the Crucible.
Upgrading an unused trophy weapon
Test the base weapon first. A rare recipe can unlock a sidegrade whose moveset or combat style does not fit the player.
Ignoring the full loadout
Weapon power works alongside armour, healing, stamina, runes, and ammunition. Complete the supporting supply chain before investing the rarest material.
Splitting Cores across several projects
Choose a primary progression weapon, reach the intended tier, then build a secondary style. Half-finished upgrade paths create storage value without encounter value.
Following an outdated recipe screenshot
Use the current Mystic Forge preview. Version 0.12.1 specifically changed Ascension Core support and identified an erroneous recipe, so older screenshots are especially risky.
Ascension progression checklist
- Complete the ordinary regional weapon ladder.
- Unlock and practise the Nightmare Crucible.
- Choose one eligible Masterwork or Vestige weapon.
- Verify the exact target-tier recipe at the Mystic Forge.
- Benchmark the weapon before spending materials.
- Farm until the upgrade and repair supply are sustainable.
- Re-test the weapon in the same encounter.
- Save the next Core for a meaningful breakpoint or second style.
