Best Base Locations in Dragonwilds
Choose the best Dragonwilds base location for early resources, regional progression, Farming, fast travel, and Umbral Sands expeditions.
Last updated: 2026-08-22
The best base location in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is not one permanent coordinate. Early characters need food, water, and simple materials; later characters need short routes to regional ore, bosses, quests, and hazards. The strongest plan is one expandable main base plus small regional outposts or return points.
This guide recommends areas and selection criteria, not brittle launch-week coordinates. Resource spawns, building restrictions, and routes can change in updates, while a good site remains useful because of what surrounds it.
Best locations at a glance
| Stage | Recommended area | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Bramblemead Valley near water and the opening route | Food, water, Ash, early quests, and a first workshop |
| Early metal | Buildable edge of the Fractured Plains | Copper, tin, Bronze progression, and a central expedition stop |
| Permanent hub | Brynmoor–Ghornfell route with flat expansion space | Shared crafting, storage, and access to several directions |
| Farming hub | Safe approach to Fellhollow with room for plots | Crops, Steel progression, Willow planters, and Terrorbird routes |
| Mountain outpost | Dowdun Reach foothills or a safe approach corridor | Mithril trips, vault preparation, and shorter recovery runs |
| Endgame outpost | Shaded, buildable approach to Umbral Sands objectives | Water resupply, Sunscorch recovery, Adamant, Yew, and boss attempts |
Best starter base: Bramblemead Valley
Build the first real shelter near fresh water, trees, food sources, and the route used by the opening quests. Bramblemead Valley is forgiving because the supplies needed for cooking, basic Construction, and early crafting sit close together. It also keeps new players near the systems they are still learning.
Choose flat ground with enough space for a Crafting Table, beds, cooking, starter storage, and the first production stations. Do not fill the whole plot with a decorative house. Leave one side open for Farming and another for the station changes introduced by later regions.
This site is best for:
- a first co-op meeting point;
- food and water security;
- Ash timber and basic building supplies;
- early quests and corpse recovery;
- learning a compact storage layout.
Best early resource base: Fractured Plains edge
The Fractured Plains are valuable during Copper, Tin, and Bronze progression. A base or small outpost on a safe, buildable edge reduces repeated travel while keeping the route back to the opening region simple.
Do not build directly in the middle of every resource you see. First check enemy patrols, terrain, and whether the ground leaves room for walls, beds, and storage. The ideal site sits close enough to an ore circuit to shorten gathering but far enough away that every crafting session is not interrupted.
Use this as an ore-and-repair outpost if the Bramblemead base already handles food, Farming, and shared storage. Moving the entire workshop for one material tier usually costs more time than establishing a small regional stop.
Best long-term main base: central Brynmoor–Ghornfell route
A permanent hub should minimise total travel across many activities rather than sit beside one rare node. Look for flat, recognisable ground on a route that connects the opening regions and later northern or eastern progression. Access to water remains valuable even after storage improves.
A long-term hub needs room for:
- Blacksmith's Bench, Armour Bench, Fletching Bench, and Mystic Forge workflows;
- ore, stone, lumber, rune, hide, cloth, food, and expedition storage;
- Farming plots, water storage, compost, and tree planting;
- beds and personal co-op storage;
- an open wall or courtyard for future stations.
Blueprints in Build Mode cost nothing to place, so use Ghost Mode to test the footprint before committing resources. The base-planning guide shows a practical production-zone layout.
Best Farming base: safe Fellhollow approach
Fellhollow introduces Farming, Steel progression, Willow planters, Green Dragonhide, Splitbark, and mount progression. A farm-focused outpost on a safe approach provides access to the region without placing daily crop maintenance deep inside its hazards.
Prioritise flat ground, water storage, straight rows for Humidify, and a clear tree-growing edge. Keep the bed and valuable storage away from the crop rows so expanding the farm does not force a full rebuild. The Farming guide explains plot matching, compost, disease, and skill spells.
Fellhollow is a good second major base if the group enjoys farming and building. If progression speed is the only goal, a smaller agricultural outpost linked to the central workshop is more efficient.
Best Dowdun Reach outpost
Dowdun Reach is vertical and makes repeated Mithril, vault, and Black Knight routes more expensive. Build on a safe approach or foothill rather than choosing a dramatic high point that turns every supply trip into another climb.
The outpost only needs a bed or recovery point, repair and food storage, spare runes or ammunition, and room to unload Mithril and quest items. Keep the primary crafting chain at the main base unless the group spends enough time in Dowdun Reach to justify duplicating stations.
Before committing, run the route at night and in poor visibility. A site that is easy to recognise and approach is better than one that is technically closer but requires risky jumps or narrow ledges.
Best Umbral Sands outpost
Umbral Sands adds Sunscorch, quicksand, Adamant, Yew, Red Dragonhide, Infinity equipment, the Fight Cave, Fuzan, and Nightmare Crucible access. The best outpost is a shaded, buildable approach that supports hydration and recovery before the dangerous part of the route.
Stock it with water, food, repaired backup equipment, runes, ammunition, and empty storage for rare drops. Do not rely on the outpost itself to eliminate Sunscorch; travel near safer times, use shade, and plan the whole route.
For repeat boss attempts, the time saved by a resupply point is more important than a panoramic view. Keep the structure simple until you confirm that the location remains convenient after several full runs.
How to test a base location before building
Use this checklist:
- Visit at day and night and identify the route without map guesswork.
- Check nearby enemies and environmental hazards.
- Confirm water, food, wood, stone, and the target regional resource are practical to reach.
- Place free blueprints in Ghost Mode to test the workshop and farm footprint.
- Run from the site to the next quest, vault, or boss objective.
- Decide whether the site deserves a full base or only an outpost.
- On dedicated servers, back up the world before a major relocation or rebuild.
The right network of bases changes with progression. Bramblemead solves survival, a central hub solves production, and regional outposts solve travel. Trying to make one location perfect at all three creates longer routes and an overcrowded workshop.
