Dragonwilds Mounts Guide: Terrorbird & Magic Carpet
Unlock Dragonwilds mounts through The Wild Hunt and Moon Garou quests, use Terrorbirds and Magic Carpets effectively, and understand variants.
Last updated: 2026-08-22
Dragonwilds currently has two mount families: the Terrorbird, introduced with Fellhollow, and the Magic Carpet, introduced with Umbral Sands. Mounts shorten long overworld journeys, while each region still rewards planning around hazards, quests, gathering stops, and Agility training.
Mounts at a glance
| Mount | Unlock route | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Terrorbird | Complete The Wild Hunt quest in Fellhollow | General overworld travel and regional progression |
| Magic Carpet | Progress the Moon Garou quests in Umbral Sands | Desert travel and safely crossing quicksand |
| Variants | Quest, activity, or reward unlocks | Cosmetic customisation after the core mount system is available |
The important prerequisite is The Wild Hunt. Jagex's Umbral Sands notes state that players still need to complete that Fellhollow quest to access mounts even if they obtain a customisation option first.
How to unlock the Terrorbird
Progress through Fellhollow after completing the opening Dragon Slayer route. Find Vannaka and follow the regional side content leading to The Wild Hunt. Completing that quest unlocks access to the mount system and the Terrorbird.
Prepare for Fellhollow before treating the quest as an early shortcut:
- carry supplies for wither-rot and Soul-rift pressure;
- use Steel, Green Dragonhide, or Splitbark progression appropriate to your style;
- establish a safe return point;
- leave inventory room for quest and mount rewards;
- complete the tracked objectives rather than following coordinates from an older patch.
Once unlocked, summon the Terrorbird for long cleared routes, travel between regional objectives, and repeated supply journeys. Dismount near dense gathering areas so you do not ride past the materials that made the trip worthwhile.
How to unlock the Magic Carpet
Magic Carpets are earned through Moon Garou quests in Umbral Sands. The regional storyline begins after the Black Knight Titan gate and develops the player's alliance with the Moon Garou and Icthlarin.
The carpet is designed for desert movement and can cross quicksand safely. It is especially valuable when travelling between shade, Garou settlements, vault routes, and repeatable combat activities. It does not remove the need for hydration or Sunscorch planning; carry water and choose safer travel times even when the path is faster.
If a carpet appearance or variant becomes visible before the underlying mount system is unlocked, finish The Wild Hunt in Fellhollow. A cosmetic unlock is not a substitute for the core prerequisite.
Terrorbird vs Magic Carpet
Use the Terrorbird when
- travelling through Brynmoor, Ghornfell, Fellhollow, or Dowdun Reach;
- running a familiar route with few gathering stops;
- moving building or expedition supplies between outposts;
- the terrain supports ordinary ground travel.
Use the Magic Carpet when
- crossing the Umbral Sands;
- quicksand interrupts direct ground routes;
- moving between desert objectives and safe shade;
- repeating Fight Cave, Fuzan, or Crucible supply runs.
Neither mount replaces a regional outpost. A nearby bed, water store, food, and repaired backup gear still reduce the cost of a failed boss attempt more than a fast ride from the far side of Ashenfall.
Mount variants and customisation
Version 0.12 added colour and appearance variants for both Terrorbirds and Magic Carpets. Treat variants as cosmetic rewards unless the live Journal explicitly states a gameplay difference. Choose the appearance you can recognise easily in co-op and keep rare variant items stored until the mount prerequisite is complete.
The Mounts menu introduced with Umbral Sands provides the live view of unlocked and unavailable appearances. Because variant availability can change in hotfixes, the in-game menu is more reliable than a static checklist copied from launch day.
Mounts and Agility XP
Riding a mount does not grant passive Agility XP. Running on foot does. The efficient compromise is:
- mount for long travel across already-cleared ground;
- dismount when scouting, gathering, or following a short objective chain;
- run between nearby activities for passive Agility progress;
- repeat timed courses when focused XP is the goal.
Mounts maximise travel speed; Agility improves the character's own movement, stamina efficiency, shortcuts, carry weight, and later abilities. Both systems remain useful. See the Agility guide for the six courses and milestone rewards.
Best mount travel setup
Carry a light travel kit rather than turning the mount into an excuse to leave unprepared:
- food and clean water;
- repaired primary weapon;
- one ranged answer;
- region-specific resistance or survival supplies;
- a small rune or ammunition reserve;
- enough free carrying capacity for the route's target materials.
For Umbral Sands, add extra hydration and plan shade. For Fellhollow, account for wither-rot. For Dowdun Reach, dismount before risky vertical paths and confirm a safe approach on foot.
Common mount problems
- A skin appears but the mount will not summon: complete The Wild Hunt first.
- Agility is not gaining XP: mounted travel does not award passive Agility XP.
- The desert still drains resources: the carpet crosses quicksand but does not make Sunscorch irrelevant.
- A route feels slower despite mounting: frequent stops, awkward terrain, or repeated dismounts may favour running and using shortcuts.
- A variant is greyed out: verify its live unlock condition in the Mounts menu; some appearances have had known availability issues.
Best progression route
Unlock the Terrorbird during Fellhollow, use it to shorten Dowdun Reach preparation, then pursue Moon Garou quests for the Magic Carpet after entering Umbral Sands. This follows the intended regional order and ensures a cosmetic reward never arrives before the account can use mounts.
