How to Beat Velgar — Dragonwilds Boss Guide
Beat General Velgar in RuneScape: Dragonwilds with the right gear, Antipoison, Challenge Horn, attack timing, and solo or co-op strategy.
Last updated: 2026-08-27
General Velgar is the first Dragon Lord fought in the main Dragonwilds story. The battle at Velgar's Rise is a readiness check for Iron-era equipment, poison management, and fighting a target that alternates between ground and aerial pressure.
You summon Velgar with a Challenge Horn during Dragon Slayer. If the recipe or arena is not available, complete the earlier steps in the Dragon Slayer walkthrough first.
Velgar quick preparation
| Slot | Practical goal |
|---|---|
| Armour | Repaired Iron-era set suited to your combat style |
| Weapon | Reliable primary weapon plus a ranged fallback |
| Defence | Anti-Dragon Shield when available, blocking, and spare Wardstone capacity |
| Consumables | Strong healing food, water, and Antipoison |
| Sustain | Enough arrows or runes for a longer-than-expected first clear |
| Recovery | Nearby Lodestone or safe bed and spare basic equipment |
Velgar is listed as a power-level 4 encounter by the community-maintained Dragonwilds Wiki. Treat the number as a floor, not proof that a mismatched set is ready. A complete, repaired build is more useful than one powerful weapon paired with weak armour and no food.
How to start the Velgar fight
Progress Dragon Slayer until Cathan's ghost gives you the Challenge Horn recipe. Craft the horn at the Smithing Anvil, return to Velgar's Rise in the Fractured Plains, and interact with the arena point.
Drink time-limited consumables immediately before summoning. Put food, Antipoison, Wardstones, and the secondary weapon on predictable hotbar positions. Do not learn the inventory layout while poison and meteors are already landing.
Velgar attacks and responses
Dragonbreath and poison
Velgar's breath creates the encounter's main attrition pressure. Use Antipoison before the fight and refresh protection when needed, but move out of the breath path rather than treating resistance as immunity to every part of the attack.
An Anti-Dragon Shield provides partial dragonbreath protection and is a sensible defensive choice for one-handed melee or crossbow setups. Keep facing the threat when blocking and do not assume the shield protects from ground effects behind you.
Ground spikes and homing attacks
Tracking earth attacks punish early dodges. Watch the telegraph, keep enough stamina in reserve, and move after the attack commits. Repeated panic rolls can leave you empty when the dangerous hit arrives.
Aerial passes and meteors
When Velgar takes flight, stop chasing directly underneath. Move away from marked or dangerous ground, maintain camera awareness, and use safe ranged shots only when they do not compromise positioning.
The downtime is also a chance to check poison, health, and weapon state. Healing during a clear disengagement is safer than waiting until the next melee opening.
Grounded damage windows
Melee builds should attack in short strings and disengage before the next committed move. Ranged and Magic builds can maintain pressure from farther away, but still need to stop casting or aiming when a telegraph demands movement.
The winning rhythm is survival first, controlled damage second. A slow attempt that preserves supplies teaches more than a burst attempt ending during the first mistake.
Best combat style for Velgar
Melee
Use a one-handed weapon with the Anti-Dragon Shield when learning the encounter. Take short openings, preserve stamina, and avoid remaining beneath Velgar after the damage window closes.
Ranged
Ranged is useful during transitions and aerial windows. Carry more arrows or bolts than the estimated minimum because missed shots and movement reduce theoretical damage. Do not stand inside poison ground simply to finish an attack animation.
Magic
Magic offers flexible range and utility, but rune supply is the failure point. Bring the elemental runes for the chosen staff and separate utility runes rather than consuming the last cast on an early phase.
Compare complete style setups in the melee, ranged, and Magic build guides.
Solo strategy
For the first solo clear, spend an attempt learning the sequence. Keep the arena centre readable, avoid backing into lingering hazards, and heal before entering emergency range. Use the ranged fallback whenever Velgar is unsafe to approach.
If ordinary hits remove too much health through armour, leave and improve the regional tier. More food cannot reliably compensate for being staggered or defeated before a safe healing window.
Co-op strategy
Spread out enough that one breath or ground attack does not pressure the whole group. Assign players to call aerial attacks and recovery windows, and require everyone to carry their own core supplies.
When a player needs to heal, the others should maintain controlled pressure without dragging Velgar across them. Reviving or recovering is easier when the team does not stack inside the same hazard.
Velgar rewards and repeat fights
The story kill awards the quest item required to finish Dragon Slayer. Return it to the Wise Old Man rather than leaving after the arena clear. Velgar can be challenged again with another horn, but farm repeat kills only when the reward goal justifies the material and supply cost.
After Dragon Slayer, continue into Fellhollow and prepare for Imaru. The wider boss order explains how the encounter fits into the live progression ladder.
